\n\t\tSecured evidence and migrations 2023\n\t<\/h3>\n\t

The number of wolves that have stayed in Austria for at least a while rose again in 2023. According to current data from the federal states, evaluated in cooperation with the Research Institute for Wildlife Ecology, 104 wolves were detected in Austria last year. The approximately 18 pups are distributed across a total of six packs in the federal territory. Two packs partially extended their territory into Czech territory. Most of the adult wolves are most likely migratory.<\/p>\n

    Update on wolf sightings 2023, February 20, 2024<\/strong><\/h4>\n

    Genetic analyses of a wolf killed in East Tyrol raised the reasonable suspicion of reproduction in the Hochstadel pack in 2023. This was noted on the map. However, further genetic examinations and body measurement analyses as well as comparison with existing data refuted the suspicion. The wolf killed was related to the parents of the pack, but not an offspring.     History of the Repopulation of Austria by the Wolf<\/h3>\n

    Of the large predators, the wolf has spread the most in Europe, particularly in the last 30 years. In comparison, the development in Switzerland (first pack in 2012) and Austria is somewhat delayed.<\/p>\n

    One important reason for this development is most likely the changing use of land: the proportion of forest is increasing, while agriculture is declining in some areas. Differences in grazing methods in particular also play a role. Both potential prey and predators, especially the wolf, have benefited from this. On the one hand, they are finding more places to retreat to and can also spread.<\/p>\n\t

    Original distribution<\/h3>\n

    Before being displaced by humans from large areas of its habitat, the wolf was found throughout the entire northern hemisphere, including the Arabian Peninsula, with the exception of the polar region. As a result of increasing cultural adoption, it was displaced from large parts of its original range.<\/p>\n

    The wolf was also native to Austria until the 19th century. The wolf is capable of large-scale migration and can repopulate areas that are more than 1,000 kilometers away from its source population. This ability and the strict protection in Europe are allowing it to slowly return to its original distribution areas.<\/p>\n

    reappearance in Austria<\/h3>\n

    Between 2009 and 2015, up to seven wolves per year were detected in Austria. They came from various Alpine regions, as well as the Balkans and the Carpathians.<\/p>\n

    The first pack was formed in Allentsteig (Lower Austria) in 2016. The parents come from the Central European lowland population.<\/p>\n
