There are currently approximately 35 independent lynx in Austria, distributed between the BBA population (continental biogeographic region; approximately 20 lynx) and the Alps (Alpine region; approximately 15 lynx).
All lynx populations in Central Europe, outside the Carpathians, originate from reintroduction projects.

The map shows a summary of the confirmed lynx sightings in the lynx years 2020, 2021, and 2022. This covers the three-year period from May 1, 2020, to April 30, 2023. The map is based exclusively on C1 sightings (hard facts), and a quadrant is colored as soon as a C1 sighting or evidence of successful reproduction is obtained during the three-year observation period.
Reliable lynx populations are found in the Mühlviertel and Waldviertel regions, in the Northern Limestone Alps, and in Vorarlberg. Regular reproduction also occurs in the Mühlviertel and Waldviertel regions and in Vorarlberg. Both breeding areas are part of cross-border lynx populations. Lynx sightings in western Tyrol and Carinthia are the result of mostly short-term incursions from neighboring areas. The distribution map shows that the vast majority of Austria is devoid of lynx populations.
